Personalized and Accountability-Based Health Coaching

One of the major differentiators that sets Orriant apart from all other wellness programs is their ability to engage 5 times more people in health coaching. Most wellness programs will coach 5- 10% of the population while Orriant regularly coaches over 50% of the population. Individualized health coaching is the most effective intervention for influencing behavior change amongst most people.

Orriant knows that not all organizations are ready to adopt such a high level of coaching immediately; hence the level of coaching can be adapted to the needs of each client. Other examples of coaching levels are 10%, 20%, 40% and 60% of the participating population.

Keep in mind that when Orriant clients implement a full 60% health coaching strategy, they consistently see improvements in the health and productivity of the whole population year-after- year.

Engaging people in behavioral change is the most difficult intervention in the entire health care system. In order to be effective, it is imperative to apply the very “best proven practices.”

The “best practice” at engaging someone in change is:

1. Rapport- Develop a relationship of trust. Make sure the person knows that their coach cares about them.

2. Meet each person where they are - Use simple but powerful questions to engage each person in their own self-directed change.

3. Assess ability and motivation – Help the person assess their own levels of both ability and motivation.

4. Identify barriers – Help the person assess and identify personal, social and environmental triggers, critical to overcome, in order to successfully accomplish the behavioral change.

5. Track progress – Ask the person to regularly track their progress on their behavioral goals.

6. Follow-up – Provide regular ongoing accountability and support to assist the person in accomplishing their desired goals.

7. Celebrating Success – A participant’s sharing their successes with their health coach is a powerful part of the change process. Knowing that someone else genuinely cares about the progress you are making to live healthier is one of the most powerful elements to accomplishing the most difficult thing there is to do in healthcare – change behavior.
